The phrase “mitochondrial peptide” creates an intuitive expectation: more cellular energy should feel like more personal energy. Reddit complicates that story. Alongside reports of improved endurance are posts describing heavy fatigue, weaker training, sleepiness, dizziness, or a brief energized period followed by a crash.
Those accounts do not prove that MOTS-c causes fatigue. They do reveal a better research question. Instead of asking whether someone felt energetic, ask what changed in exercise output, perceived effort, food intake, sleep, resting heart rate, glucose, and recovery over the following two days.
The fatigue pattern is not one single experience
Some users describe immediate sleepiness. Others report normal daily energy but unusually poor exercise performance. A third pattern is early stimulation followed by delayed fatigue, while another group notices no change at all. Combining these experiences under one “fatigue side effect” label can obscure useful differences.
Timing matters. Fatigue that begins after a hard workout raises different questions from sleepiness at rest. Delayed symptoms in long COVID or ME/CFS communities may also reflect post-exertional worsening rather than a simple short-lived reaction.
Mitochondrial biology is not the same as a stimulant effect
Foundational MOTS-c research describes metabolic signaling, AMPK-related pathways, and effects in cells and mice. Human physiology research has shown that endogenous MOTS-c changes around exercise. None of these findings promises that administered MOTS-c will feel energizing in a person.
Exercise itself can produce temporary fatigue while supporting longer-term adaptation. That analogy does not explain MOTS-c fatigue, but it illustrates why a pathway associated with exercise cannot be reduced to an immediate sensation of stimulation.
Common confounders can imitate or amplify fatigue
Reddit experiments often occur during calorie restriction, aggressive training, poor sleep, illness recovery, or use of GLP-1 drugs and other peptides. Low intake, dehydration, medication effects, anemia, thyroid disease, sleep apnea, and infection can all affect energy and exercise tolerance.
Product uncertainty adds another layer. A label does not confirm identity, content, impurities, sterility, or storage integrity. A surprising reaction may involve the claimed peptide, the formulation, contamination, another substance, or an unrelated condition.
Do not train through a concerning signal
Chest pain, fainting, severe dizziness, trouble breathing, new neurological symptoms, facial swelling, or an unusually rapid or irregular heartbeat deserves prompt medical attention rather than a harder workout to test the theory.
What the human evidence can and cannot answer
In a small human component of a 2021 study, researchers measured naturally produced MOTS-c in muscle and circulation around exercise. Most performance-enhancement findings in that paper came from mice given MOTS-c. This is important biology, but it is not a human efficacy trial of an online injectable product.
FDA’s current compounding information states that it has not identified human exposure data for MOTS-c drug products and lacks important safety information. The agency also notes peptide impurity and immunogenicity concerns. This leaves the Reddit fatigue pattern unresolved.
A better way to investigate an energy claim
- Separate mental alertness, physical energy, exercise output, perceived effort, and delayed recovery.
- Use the same safe submaximal workout or daily task under similar conditions.
- Record calories, protein, carbohydrate timing, hydration, caffeine, illness, and sleep.
- Track symptoms for 48 hours after activity when delayed fatigue is possible.
- Include no-effect days and adverse changes rather than recording only personal bests.
How to make your tracking more useful
Strong personal logs begin with a short baseline and keep the same measurements long enough for a pattern to emerge. Peptify can connect dates, context, and observations locally on your device so the record is more useful than memory alone.
- A repeatable submaximal task, duration or output, perceived effort, heart-rate response, and 24-to-48-hour recovery.
- Daily mental alertness and physical energy recorded as separate ratings.
- Sleep, calorie and protein intake, hydration, caffeine, illness symptoms, weight change, and overall training load.
- Dizziness, palpitations, headache, insomnia, unusual fatigue, gastrointestinal symptoms, and injection-site reactions.

Questions to discuss with a healthcare practitioner
- Could anemia, thyroid disease, sleep apnea, infection, medication effects, calorie restriction, or another condition explain the fatigue?
- Is exercise testing appropriate if post-exertional malaise, cardiovascular symptoms, or an unresolved illness is possible?
- Which symptoms should trigger laboratory testing, an electrocardiogram, or urgent assessment?
- What human exposure information exists for the exact product and route being considered?
